Russia Counts on Trump to Press for Ukraine War End

(MENAFN) Russia anticipates that U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration will maintain efforts to guide the resolution of the Ukraine conflict toward a political and diplomatic path, despite the situation’s inherent difficulty, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday.

During a press briefing in Moscow, Peskov noted that Trump had recently acknowledged the Ukraine conflict was more challenging than he initially believed.

"This is exactly what we’ve been saying from the very beginning – it's impossible to solve everything overnight," Peskov said. "We hope that Trump and his team will continue their efforts to bring the Ukrainian settlement process to a political and diplomatic level."

Throughout his campaign for a second term in the White House, Trump had repeatedly claimed he could bring the Russia-Ukraine war to an end within 24 hours. However, last month he admitted the issue is "more difficult than people would have any idea."

Addressing reports from media outlets that Trump, during campaign rallies last fall, allegedly threatened to bomb Russia and China, Peskov downplayed the concerns, describing the situation as under control and characterizing Trump’s rhetoric as part of his established persona.

"Generally, he has quite a tough style," Peskov said.

He also stated that Russia recognizes Washington's desire to resolve the war swiftly but stressed that the intricacies of the conflict make a quick resolution unrealistic.

"Certain work has already been carried out, two very challenging rounds (of talks in Istanbul) have taken place. We expect that the third round will eventually take place, and the dialogue will continue," he said, adding that Russia is still waiting for Ukraine to propose potential dates for a third round of negotiations.

Peskov also responded to media reports citing Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, who allegedly supports regaining control in the Russian border regions of Kursk and Belgorod. Peskov emphasized that Russia's military remains active in those areas.

"Our troops are moving forward, they are creating buffer zones to ensure the security of our regions," he said.
